Default Reply to Edinburgh vs Durham for Law

Both of these universities are at a high standard academically, and if you are making your decision purely based on which has a better academic reputation I would chose Edinburgh. The university was ranked as the 23rd best university in the world in the THES world rankings and is, in my opinion, the best university in Scotland.

As far as Law is concerned, both departments have a good reputation and I myself had to decide which I would rather study Law at. From speaking with several solicitors and law graduates, I was told that Edinburgh University's Law Department is considered to be the best in Scotland, particularly if you wish to become an advocate (barrister in England). However, league tables, for example the one found on "The Times" website, would have you believe Aberdeen University and Durham are both better than Edinburgh for Law. Pay no attention to these tables; anyone can see that their tables are influenced by student satisfaction surveys and things of this nature which don't really reflect how good the course is.

Instead, you should look at the reputation of the university as a whole and speak to people who actually know something about the specific departments of universities. Unfortunately, the two institutionns are both highly regarded in the UK, though Durham doesn't enjoy such high regard in Europe and America as does Edinburgh.

The city itself is what draws many people to both study and visit Edinburgh as it has a lot to offer everyone. Students get to live in a relatively clean and comfortable but also lively city, while tourist and culture fanatics alike can visit famous landmarks like Edinburgh Castle.

In the end it's down to personal preference, but I would recommend you chose the world class city with a wolrd class university - Edinburgh.
