Liverpool is a rough diamond. Underneath the surface impression are tons of facilities and thriving nightlife.
I don't think the locals are anti-student just a bit suspicious of you (ie thinking students are posh, loaded ...etc). If you mix with them a lot and get to know them, most of them are salt of the earth.
